Board President’s Report

As I reflect back on the past 13 years, I see the progress we have made yet I know that our work is not complete, in fact it is just beginning. The people who came to our organization and found our Mission Statement to be true measure the value of our past success. With each new day comes additional problems people face, these problems bring them to us and we must be able to provide them with a solution not just a “temporary fix”.

This year alone has brought an increase in unemployment but a decrease in unemployment security. People that have been at their place of employment for ten years and more have received a “pink slip”. Some companies have left our city and moved to another that offers more incentives and others have closed their doors completely. There is a definite need for more job training and placement programs such as our Financial Services/Insurance Program, which at the time of this Annual Report is scheduled to begin April 2004.

Both of our Child Care Centers, Home Of Life “Just For You” and HLCDC II are almost at its’ capacity. With the exception of our Infant and Toddler Classrooms, which hopefully will be opening soon once the State approves our licensing.

Our Annual Banquet for the Reverend Johnny Henderson Scholarship Fund will be held August 14, 2004. This year we look forward to providing financial assistance to even more young adults seeking to obtain their full potential in education

The Youth Services (ages 6-18) and School Age (ages 6-12) component of our program continues to provide after school services such as homework assistance, mentoring and other innovative services to children. The School Age Program consist of a before school component and all day component when there is no school.

This spring we anticipate the start of construction for our new Outreach Center at 4606 West Monroe Street. This three level facility will include a library, two computer labs, game/activity room, several classrooms, full kitchen and gym with exercise equipment.

I would like to say thank you to Chicago Department Of Human Services, Empowerment Zone, Illinois Department Of Human Services, Chicago Public Schools, Alderman Ed Smith, 28th; Alderman Emma Mitts, 37th; Congressman Danny K. Davis, 7th District and others too numerous to name for you continued support of our programs.

I extend a special thanks to our Board of Directors: Executive Director, Ms. Annie Smith: Division Director, Ms. Delores Sheppard; teaching staff; administrative staff and all other staff persons for your hard work and tireless effort in making sure that we accomplish our goals. I encourage you to maintain our base operations, continue to pursue other avenues to obtain additional funding, take excellent care of our children and stay focused.

To the Home Of Life Missionary Baptist Church family, I thank you for your prayers and support. Remember, you are an essential part of Home Of Life Community Development Corporation, which was organized, as an umbrella to help aide the development of the holistic person because that is what God requires that we do. Remember, “Where there is no vision, the people perish”.
